TRACTION ENGINES FOR SALE

⦁ SCALE 6”
⦁ OA Length 80 ¾” 2050 mm
⦁ OA Height 60” 1525 mm
⦁ OA Width 36” 915mm
⦁ Weight of Tractor 1000 kg.
⦁ Rear Wheel Diameter 28 ½”
⦁ Front Wheel Diameter 18 ¾”
⦁ Flywheel diameter 18 x 2 ⅝”
⦁ Twin Cylinder. Can be a compound but we are doing as a straight twin for ease of construction. The straight twin is self-starting and has an abundance of power. The cylinder castings are a compound look alike. The cylinder block is approximately 300 mm cubed. The cylinder Bore is 2 ¾” x 4 ¼” Stroke double acting slide valve with Stevenson’s valve gear.
⦁ Crankshaft is built up from bar stock, silver brazed and finished machined.
⦁ Boiler is a Wet Back type. 10 ¾” OD barrel x 990 mm OA Length. Under 50 Litre capacity which is covered by the AMBSC.
⦁ Original Boiler Drawing for this is a Briggs. New Drawings are being done for the Briggs and a Wetback to the latest code.
⦁ The original owner claimed nothing could stop it as it had so much power.
⦁ I bought the professionally made patterns from the original owner in 2017 and am in the process of updating the drawings for 6” scale.
⦁ A few of us are banding together to build a batch of them. I have the capacity to machine all the larger components and cut the gears and splines for those that lack the capacity.
⦁ Some of the castings are: Cylinder Block including valve chests. Valve chest covers. Front & Rear Cylinder Covers. Valve & Trunk Guides. Wheel Hubs. Smoke Box Door & Nameplate. Chimney base & Top. Flywheel. Gears. Water Pump. Steering Wheel plus various other patterns.
⦁ I can supply ready machined components like the Cylinder Block, Crankshaft and Gears as well as a completed Boiler.
⦁ I’ve got to clean the patterns up ready for the Foundry so I can get some pricing done.
⦁ All the gears will be cut on my machines from K1045 steel blanks.
⦁ The picture above is of the original 6” scale tractor built from these patterns.

Durham and North Yorkshire Traction Engine in 3” scale with copper boiler.
Originally designed as a 2” scale engine by John Hanning and serialized in Model Engineer (Vol 144 to Vol 146) the drawings from Blackgates Engineering were redrawn to produce a 3” scale traction engine.
Principal Dimensions (mm)

Rear Wheels 426 dia x 106
Front Wheels 267 dia x 64
Single Cylinder 50 bore x 76 stroke
Boiler 191 dia x 630 long

With an all-copper boiler and a grate measuring 185mm x 130mm this traction engine steams very well on wood, char or coal. Boiler feed is by plunger pump on the right-hand side and an injector on the left-hand side. There is a water tank under the coal bunker. AMBSC Boiler Certificate current to May 2026.
The new rubber tires also make it easy to drive on all surfaces. Included in the sale are the driving cart and the passenger wagon, a set of Blackgates Engineering drawings and a set of as built drawings.
